A Lighter Bottle for a Lighter Future: Broadland Drinks and Aldi Launch Aluminium Wine Format

Friday 11th April, 2025

At Broadland Drinks, our mission is clear: Solutions for the drinks trade that deliver Sustainability, Innovation and Efficiency. Our latest partnership with Aldi UK is a perfect expression of that ambition — and a significant step forward for more sustainable wine packaging in the UK market.

Launching in stores from 14th April, Aldi’s new Costellore Pinot Grigio is the UK’s first supermarket own-brand wine in an aluminium bottle — a lightweight, fully recyclable format that delivers both environmental impact and commercial value.

Sustainable by Design

The aluminium bottle weighs just 95 grams, making it around 75% lighter than traditional glass. This dramatically reduces carbon emissions across transport and logistics, with every truckload saving over 5 tonnes in weight versus glass. And with aluminium’s high recycling rates and infinite recyclability, this format supports a closed-loop packaging economy with far lower emissions at end-of-life.

The wine itself is shipped in bulk from Italy and bottled here in the UK at our sustainably powered facility, further reducing the carbon footprint associated with shipping while supporting UK manufacturing and jobs.

Innovative Packaging with Purpose

We know that packaging is the biggest contributor to a bottle of wine’s carbon footprint — often accounting for up to 40% of total emissions. By moving away from glass and into alternative formats like aluminium, we are helping our partners address one of the most urgent challenges in the drinks industry: reducing emissions without compromising product quality or shelf appeal.

This aluminium format combines technical performance, aesthetic flexibility, and environmental responsibility, offering a compelling new solution for retailers seeking lower-carbon alternatives at scale.

Efficient at Every Stage

The efficiencies of this format extend beyond carbon. Lighter loads mean fewer emissions, lower transport costs, and easier handling throughout the supply chain — from the bottling line to the distribution centre to store shelf. The strength and durability of aluminium also reduce breakages, helping to cut waste and improve operational performance.

A Shared Vision for Progress

We’re proud to partner with Aldi, who continues to lead the way in sustainable retail practices. Their recent recognition as Sustainable Drinks Retailer of the Year at the 2025 Drinks Retailing Awards is a well-earned testament to their commitment to accessible, low-impact innovation.

This launch builds on Aldi’s expanding portfolio of sustainable formats — including paper bottles and lightweight glass — and reflects our shared vision for a more responsible, future-ready drinks industry.

Looking Ahead

At Broadland Drinks, we’re committed to delivering packaging solutions that work harder for people, the planet and partners. We see this launch not as a one-off innovation but as part of a much bigger shift in how the industry approaches packaging, sustainability and long-term value.

By combining sustainability, innovation and efficiency, we’re helping retailers and brand owners futureproof their ranges while delivering tangible environmental benefits.

Together, we can reimagine what wine packaging looks like — and what it can do.
